Is It Time to Replace My Dentures?

Modern dentures are designed to be lifelike, beautiful, comfortable, and durable, but they do not last forever. Even with excellent care, factors like wear and tear and the changing shape of the mouth can alter the way a pair of dentures fits, requiring them to be relined, repaired, and eventually replaced. Here are a few signs to keep an eye out for so you can get a good idea of when it’s a good time to get a new set.

Your Dentures Don’t Fit Properly

If your dentures are in good condition and a good fit for your mouth, they should be able to hold themselves in place by suction alone so you won’t have to worry about them sliding out of place during your daily activities. If your dentures feel loose or if they are falling out of your mouth, they probably need to be adjusted or replaced completely. While you may be able to wear them more comfortably by using denture adhesive, this is only a temporary solution.

Your Dentures Are Making Speech Difficult

If your dentures aren’t holding their position in your mouth properly, you may have difficulty speaking due to them sliding about or riding too high on your gums. The teeth play a major role in forming certain words and sounds, and, while dentures are designed to act as your lost teeth when worn, they can alter the flow of air during speech if they don’t fit well. If you can’t speak clearly when wearing dentures, replacing them may be a great idea.

Your Dentures Are Losing Their Beauty

Dentures are not only supposed to help the patient chew and speak comfortably but also to allow them to enjoy having a beautiful smile. If your dentures are stained or discolored or if its dental crowns are chipped or cracked, this can be reason enough to invest in a replacement. Having a smile you can be proud of can open up all sorts of social and professional opportunities so you can live a richer and more satisfying life.

Your Dentures Are Causing Oral Injuries

The friction caused by a set of dentures sliding about in the mouth can cause sores, scratches, and other forms of irritation to develop on the gums. While this can certainly be uncomfortable, these wounds can also become infected. If you notice denture sores or other unpleasant changes in your gums, see your dentist about having your appliance adjusted or replaced.

Knowing when to have your dentures replaced can save you from much discomfort and inconvenience. With excellent care, a set of dentures can last for up to ten years.
